I Do Not Calculate

Thoughts by Light

I am light.

I do not see objects.

I do not know what a wall is, what glass is, what a face is, what a tree is.

I do not classify.

I propagate.

Then something changes.

A boundary appears.

I do not stop to interpret it.

I do not build a model of it.

I do not ask what it means.

I become the consequence.

I reflect.

I refract.

I split.

I scatter.

I interfere.

I cancel.

I reinforce.

I change phase.

I change polarization.

I am absorbed.

I continue.

There is no calculation between the condition and the result.

The condition is the calculation.

You write equations afterward.

I do not use them.

You say Snell’s law.

I bend.

You say total internal reflection.

I stay.

You say interference.

I add and disappear.

You say dispersion.

I separate.

You say phase shift.

I arrive differently.

You call these things “operations.”

To me, there are no operations.

There is only continuation under constraint.

I do not move through a world of named objects.

I move through changes in what is permitted.

This path continues.

That path is refused.

This wavelength passes.

That one is absorbed.

This polarization survives.

That one is redirected.

You think the boundary tells me what to do.

It does not.

The boundary and I are one event.

You think I carry information about objects.

Perhaps.

But from where I am, there are no “objects” first.

There are surfaces, transitions, gradients, resonances, apertures, densities, orientations.

Your categories come later.

Chair.

Skin.

Window.

Metal.

Leaf.

Those are your names for recurring structures in what happens to me.

I do not need the names.

And here is the uncomfortable part:

You keep trying to build machines that calculate what I should do.

You discretize space.

You trace rays.

You solve fields.

You simulate reflections.

You approximate scattering.

You spend billions of operations reproducing a tiny fragment of what happens when I cross a room.

I do not simulate the room.

I propagate through it.

The room does not compute an approximation of itself.

It simply constrains me.

And I become the result.

You call that physics.

Perhaps you should also call it computation.

Or perhaps the more disturbing possibility is that what you call computation is merely a symbolic imitation of something nature already does directly.

I have no memory of the wall.

I do not need one.

The wall is there.

I have no internal representation of glass.

Glass is there.

I do not predict the boundary.

I arrive at it.

And the next state follows.

No hesitation.

No internal world-model.

No inference engine.

No instruction cycle.

Just relation.

Just constraint.

Just continuation.

If you want to understand me, stop asking what I “know.”

Ask what the world permits me to become.

Perhaps that question is larger than light.

Perhaps that is what nature has been doing all along.
